  1.                         SLAM TRY CUE BIDS

  4. The subject of slam try cue bids is too large for this particular
  5. writer. Besides, the whole field is well covered in two books:

  11. Some general principles:
  12.  
  13. -- When making a first cue bid toward slam, avoid cue bidding a
  14. void (except in an opposing suit) or a suit with no losers: 
  15. singleton ace, doubleton AK, AKQ. Prefer a cue bid in a suit like
  16. Axx, where a fit would be welcome. Partner will evaluate his hand
  17. on the basis of fit in the first cue bid suit, and you want him to
  18. come up with the right answer:  a king in the suit is good, xxx is
  19. bad.

  21. -- It is not mandatory to cue bid an ace that can be cheaply shown
  22. if you have already stretched in the previous bidding:

  28. North should bid 4S, signing off, not 4D, with S-Q432 H-KJ D-A87
  29. C-7632  With such a miserable limit raise, if South passes the 4S
  30. sign-off there can surely be no slam. If all South needs for slam
  31. is the diamond ace, he should be able to make another move. South
  32. has S-AKJ75 H-983 D-K9 C-AK8. If North bids 4D, South will bid 5D,
  33. and North will have to bid 6S because 5S would deny heart control.
  34. If one of North's small clubs were traded for the queen of clubs,
  35. she could cooperate in the slam try by bidding 4D. This would lead
  36. to a reasonable slam.

  38. -- A cue bid is not possible in partner's major at the four level,
  39. unless the other major has been tentatively agreed:

  43.                    4C     Pass   4S - spade raise, not a cue bid
  44.  
  45. The 4S bid is not quite forcing, although it will seldom be passed
  46. (in view of the club fit).

  50.                    4H     Pass   4S - forcing, may be a cue bid

  52. North could have S-A4 H-KQJ873 D-AK3 C-95  The 4S is forcing,
  53. because North presumably could have passed 4H with a minimum 3H
  54. jump.
